ChatGPT Ads is worth testing if you sell consumer goods, local services, travel or courses and already track conversions. In Brazil, however, health, financial and legal services generally stay off the platform. Since there are no performance benchmarks, ChatGPT Ads should run on its own budget, alongside Google Ads and Meta Ads.
In short
- OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads does not have performance benchmarks by industry or campaign yet.
- OpenAI generally bans ads for health, financial and legal services outside the US. For these sectors, therefore, the way in is the organic answer.
- The ad does not change the organic answer. According to two studies, the answer cited the advertiser as a source in under 4% of cases.
- Test ChatGPT Ads with new budget, the pixel installed and the same cost-per-conversion target as Google Ads and Meta Ads. For accounts in Brazilian reais, the minimum is R$ 40 per day.
Do ads in ChatGPT deliver results?
You can’t know in advance whether ChatGPT Ads is worth it, because the channel is still in beta. According to OpenAI, the platform has no performance benchmarks by advertiser, industry or campaign type. The published success stories come from OpenAI and its partners, but one advertiser’s test brought clicks and few sign-ups.
Since August 2026, ChatGPT has shown ads in Brazil below the answer, on the Free and Go plans. Advertisers pay per impression or per click. The format, the rules and who can advertise are in the ChatGPT Ads guide.
On October 5, 2026, OpenAI published cases measured by partners. According to DV Rockerbox, WeightWatchers’ attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT came in 15.3% below its blended paid search benchmark. In addition, a WorkMagic geo-lift study estimated 2.3 times more incremental orders for the Dose brand than last-click attribution captured. However, OpenAI does not name the campaigns’ countries, and the company that sells the ads chose the cases.
The counterpoint comes from SE Ranking, which sells SEO and AI visibility tools. It ran ads for about two weeks in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The test drew more than 97,000 impressions and 1,263 clicks, with an average CTR of 1.30%. However, sign-ups were few, and the company did not keep using the channel. Still, it notes that it tested in June, with manual CPC bidding and no in-platform conversion data.

What kind of business is ChatGPT Ads right for?
ChatGPT Ads is worth it for businesses in allowed categories that already track conversions. Their customers should also use the Free or Go plans. For now, OpenAI focuses on consumer goods, local services, travel, entertainment, digital products and education. In general, OpenAI’s ad policies ban ads for health, financial and legal services outside the US.
The same rules ban political ads in every country. For example, a dental clinic in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, generally cannot advertise and has to compete for the organic answer. In finance, however, OpenAI’s eligibility table limits deposit accounts, cards, insurance and investments to a small group of approved advertisers.
The policies also ban ads for a single job opening or a specific property for sale or rent. Listing sites can advertise, as long as the ad and the page do not mention a specific listing.
According to the OpenAI Help Center, ads appear on the Free and Go plans, except for users under 18. As a result, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers see no ads, and neither does Temporary Chat. In B2B, this weighs heavily, as SE Ranking’s paid media specialist sums up:
“Attention on ChatGPT is cheap for our niche compared with the other paid traffic sources we use. The problem is who’s behind those clicks: ads only reach Free and Go users, and the more someone looks like our ICP, the more likely they’re on a paid, ad-free plan.”

For consumer brands, on the other hand, scale helps. According to OpenAI, Brazil is one of ChatGPT’s three largest markets by weekly active users.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads: which should you choose?
For existing demand, keep Google Ads as your base, because ChatGPT Ads is worth it only as a separate test. On Google, the advertiser picks keywords and sees the search terms that triggered the ad. In ChatGPT, by contrast, the advertiser describes contexts and gets only aggregate numbers, with no access to chats.
According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads basics, context hints guide delivery, but they are not exact-match keywords. In addition, they do not guarantee that the ad shows in a given conversation. For CPC campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5. However, the final price comes from a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.
Cost matters too. Meio & Mensagem, a Brazilian marketing trade outlet, published an Ad Age report in July 2026. According to the report, cost per click remains high. For example, Paul Low of PMG saw an average CPC of about $6 in some accounts. That is about twice what he would expect from a generic Google search. Even so, looking at total revenue, he says the channel usually ranks among the three most efficient.
| Criterion | Google Ads | ChatGPT Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Intent signal | Searched keyword | Conversation context |
| Control | Keywords | Context hints, no guarantee |
| Reporting | Terms that triggered the ad | Aggregate numbers |
| Audience | People searching on Google | Free and Go plan users |
| Performance benchmark | Account history | Does not exist yet |
If there is no new budget for ChatGPT Ads, take it from your weakest Google Ads campaigns. Pick those with the worst cost per conversion, never those that hit the target. If you want to test AI features without leaving Google, you can use AI Max in Search campaigns.
ChatGPT Ads vs Meta Ads: which is better for leads?
For lead volume, Meta Ads has a format advantage over ChatGPT Ads. For example, Meta has instant forms and ads that open a WhatsApp chat. In ChatGPT, the lead happens on the advertiser’s page, and the channel takes more patience before conversion.
On Meta, form data can also go straight to a CRM.
In ChatGPT, lists with fewer than 25,000 matched users can only exclude people, according to OpenAI. Campaigns can also target location and platform, such as app or web browser. In Brazil, OpenAI’s location catalog lists states and postal codes, but not cities.
The user’s moment is also different. According to OpenAI, people who use ChatGPT to make a decision do not always click the ad right away. So the platform measures conversions after the click and, within a one-day window, after the view. To see if ChatGPT Ads are worth it next to Meta Ads, compare equivalent windows and lead quality in the CRM.
| Criterion | Meta Ads | ChatGPT Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Where the lead happens | Form or chat in the app | Advertiser’s page |
| Targeting | Interests, demographics and lists | Context, location, platform and lists |
| User’s moment | Scrolling the feed | Research and comparison |
If the funnel needs many fast, cheap leads, keep Meta Ads as the base and test ChatGPT Ads. After all, ChatGPT Ads is worth it when the product calls for research and comparison before purchase.
How do you set up a ChatGPT Ads test and how much should you spend?
Set aside new budget for ChatGPT Ads, without taking it from Google Ads campaigns that hit the target. Then multiply the conversions the client needs to make a decision by the cost per conversion it accepts today. Run the test for at least four weeks, with the pixel or the Conversions API.
For accounts billed in Brazilian reais, the minimum daily budget is R$ 40, according to OpenAI’s table. However, that floor is not a recommendation.
- Check that you can advertise. The category must be eligible, and the company must have its headquarters in a country with self-serve access. Currently, Brazil is on OpenAI’s list. In addition, the landing page must allow the OAI-AdsBot crawler, which OpenAI requires for ad review.
- Set up measurement. Configure the pixel or the Conversions API with a standard event, such as a purchase or a lead. Use your own UTMs, so that GA4 does not mix the paid click with organic visits from chatgpt.com. The guide to AI traffic in GA4 shows where those visits appear.
- Set the yardstick. In ChatGPT Ads, use the same event, window and CPA or ROAS target as in Google Ads and Meta Ads. For leads, also check quality in the CRM.
- Give the campaign time. The daily budget is a seven-day average, and spend on one day can reach twice that amount. In addition, OpenAI warns that delivery and spend can fluctuate during the beta.
- Decide with the numbers. Compare CPA and quality with the other channels. If ChatGPT Ads stays above target, adjust the context hints once before you pause it. Only then can you tell whether ChatGPT Ads is worth it for that client.

Does advertising on ChatGPT improve a brand’s organic presence?
No. According to OpenAI, ads run on systems separate from the model, and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter the answer. Likewise, market data shows that the advertiser rarely appears as a source in the answer above its ad. In other words, organic presence depends on content and third-party sources, not on budget.
SE Ranking analyzed 50,006 commercial prompts in the US on July 23, 2026. The advertiser’s domain showed up among the sources in only 3.63% of placements. Meanwhile, the answer mentioned the brand in 4.44% of cases. In the prompts Seer Interactive tracks for clients, the advertiser appeared in the answer for 5.4% of 3,697 ads. Also, the answer cited the advertiser as a source in only 3.3% of cases. Note that Seer is an agency that sells paid media, SEO and GEO.
On the other hand, the reverse risk exists. In the same data, only 7.3% of answers to prompts with a brand’s name carried that brand’s own ad. Seer saw one competitor use that space to invite the user to switch brands. In other words, the brand recommended in the answer may have a rival’s ad right below it.
Anyone who invests in ChatGPT Ads should track what the answer says about the brand and who advertises below it. The protocol for measuring presence and citations is in the guide on how to measure brand mentions and citations. Similarly, the guide on how to show up in ChatGPT explains what makes the answer cite a site. Therefore, ChatGPT Ads is worth it as media, not as a shortcut to the organic answer.
When is GEO a better investment than ads?
GEO is the better investment when the category cannot advertise or the ideal customer uses an ad-free plan. The same goes when the answer already recommends competitors. After all, the organic answer appears on every plan and does not disappear when the budget runs out. On the other hand, ChatGPT Ads is worth it for launches, promotions and allowed categories with tracked conversions.
The guide to what GEO is explains this work, which gets the brand into AI answers without paying for space. In fact, much of it happens off the site, in sources AI cites most, such as press, reviews and forums.
Before you buy space below the answer, read the answer. In one B2B client audit, for example, Seer found no brand content on ROI, pricing or competitor comparisons. Meanwhile, rivals owned all three topics in AI answers. So, for the agency, running ads on top of that would hurt the brand and waste budget. A competitor comparison page is one of the pieces that closes this gap.
| Situation | Best path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic, bank or law firm | GEO | Ads generally banned outside the US |
| Specific property or job opening | GEO | Ads banned by the policies |
| B2B buyer on a paid plan | GEO first | Plus, Pro and Business users see no ads |
| Answer already recommends competitors | GEO first | The ad does not change the answer |
| Store with a feed and pixel | Ads and GEO | Allowed category and tracked sales |
| Launch or short promotion | Ads | Because GEO has no guaranteed timeline |
